We follow Claire "Neely" O'Neil as she moves from New York and a troubled past back to her hometown of Millcreek Valley, Ohio to open up her own bakery. She is a unique baker, in that she is able to sense what flavors work best for certain people at specific times in their lives. She can "taste feelings" and customize her creations for her customers based on what they emotionally need at that time. That alone pulled me in because magical food is just wonderful always. Each chapter has a section following Neely in the present day and a section that jumps back in time and follows other characters. There is a bit of a mystery that's going on throughout the story as well as Neely figuring her own life out and side characters going through their own issues as well.
A couple of scenes were a bit more intense than I would have expected from a book like this but they were integral parts of the story and didn't feel like they were thrown in just for shock value. Thinking back to the story from the beginning, there was A LOT going on and for a 248 page book, it did feel a bit jammed up. As much as I enjoy a fast read, I think this could have benefited from a bit more time with the characters and a bit more explanation in the storyline. However, the writing was really beautiful and more intricate than I might have expected. Overall, this was a lovely, fun story and is a feel-good read that will make you REALLY hungry for sweets.
