I finally got to what seems to be everyone's favorite installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R. R. Martin. A Storm of Swords is the third in the series and was full of so many deaths and plot twists that I don't know how any other book in the series is going to live up to it. This was the first book where I did feel a bit confused at times because we met so many new characters and there were so many story lines. This was also the first book where I felt I could really appreciate Mr. Martin's writing and his interweaving plots, characters, even sayings that were repeated throughout the book.
A piece of writing I really enjoyed is quoted below. It contains major spoilers so beware.
…The white tears and the red ones ran together until her face was torn and tattered, the face that Ned loved. Catelyn Stark raised her hands and watched the blood run down her long fingers, over her wrists, beneath the sleeves of her gown. Slow red worms crawled along her arms and under her clothes. It tickles. That made her laugh until she screamed. "Mad," someone said, "she's lost her wits," and someone else said, "Make and end," and a hand grabbed her scalp just as she'd done with Jinglebell, and she thought, No, don't, don't cut my hair. Ned loves my hair. Then the steel was at her throat, and its bite was red and cold. (pg. 705 in the MM edition)
The imagery and emotion this passage holds is bone-chilling. I am really looking forward to moving onto the next book even though I've heard its the weakest in the bunch. I am completely captivated by this world and my excitement and love for these characters (even the crazy ones) deepens after each book.
